IELTS Speaking Part 1 lasts between 4 to 5 minutes and consists of general questions about your hometown, work, studies, hobbies, and daily routines. While it is considered the "warm-up" phase, giving short 1-word or 1-sentence answers can immediately cap your score in Fluency and Coherence.
Combine these Part 1 techniques with our complete IELTS Part 2 Cue Card Strategy and IELTS Part 3 Deep Dive.
1. The Direct Answer + Extension Rule
Never reply with just "Yes" or "No". Always provide a direct answer followed by a 1-sentence explanation or example:
- Bad: "Do you like flowers?" -> "Yes, I like them."
- Good: "Absolutely, I find fresh flowers really uplifting, especially orchids which I keep on my study desk."
2. Avoid Memorized Answers
Examiners are trained to spot robotic, memorized scripts. If your response sounds rehearsed, the examiner will interrupt and shift to another topic. Focus on spontaneous natural delivery.
